Nile Care Advocacy for Peace and Development

Nile Care Advocacy for Peace and Development (NILECAPD) is a Canadian and South Sudanese non-profit humanitarian and development organisation operating in Canada and South Sudan, and working to promote peace, development, and dignity through strategic programming in climate change adaptation and conflict mitigation, environmental protection, education, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), food security and livelihoods (FSL), protection, peacebuilding, and emergency humanitarian aid. NILECAPD engages communities to recover from crises and build resilience for sustainable development.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, NILECAPD supports vulnerable seniors, youth, newcomers, and families facing poverty, homelessness, trauma, addiction, mental health challenges, and social isolation. Through compassionate support and advocacy, we address immediate needs, promote well-being, and connect individuals and families with essential resources and opportunities for lasting stability and social inclusion.

NILECAPD was founded in 2014 in South Sudan and incorporated as a Canadian Charity in 2018, in response to the devastating civil war that erupted in South Sudan in 2013 and to support vulnerable seniors, youth, newcomers, and families facing poverty, homelessness, trauma, addiction, mental health challenges, and social isolation in Canada.

Core Program Areas

Climate Change Adaptation and Conflict Mitigation

We address climate challenges, including drought, flooding, deforestation, and food insecurity, by promoting environmental awareness, sustainable agriculture, natural resource conservation, and community resilience to protect ecosystems and sustain livelihoods.

Our program spearheads peacebuilding and conflict resolution initiatives, aiming to address the impacts of war and conflicts on communities. Through capacity building, reconciliation, and negotiation, we work toward sustainable peace and strong communities.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

We ensure access to clean water for communities lacking proper water sources, with a focus on menstrual hygiene for women and girls, promoting dignity and well-being.

Food Security and Livelihood

Alleviating hunger and ensuring food security is a key focus of our program. We work towards sustainable agricultural practices, empowering communities with knowledge and resources to improve farming techniques and enhance food production. Through initiatives such as vocational training and income-generating activities, we empower individuals to become self-reliant and break the cycle of poverty.

Health and Nutrition

Our program addresses the critical health needs of vulnerable populations, providing accessible healthcare facilities and focusing on reducing malnutrition rates, especially among women and children. We promote health education, disease prevention, and hygiene practices to improve overall well-being and contribute to healthier communities.

Gender-Based Violence and Women’s Empowerment

We actively advocate for social justice and gender empowerment, seeking to eliminate discrimination, promote equal rights, and empower marginalized individuals and groups. Our program supports victims of violence to access legal justice systems and receive counselling and guidance. We strive for gender equality through advocacy, awareness campaigns, capacity building, and social justice initiatives.

Child Protection

Our program aims to reunite children separated from their families due to conflicts and emergencies, fostering family unity and advocating for safe relocation in emergency situations.

Strategic Priorities

A. Resource Development and Sustainability: Diversify and expand funding opportunities, volunteer engagement, and other resources to support organizational growth and sustainability.

B. Visibility and Awareness: Increase NILECAPD’s visibility, public awareness, and recognition within the community.

C. Partnerships and Collaboration: Build strategic relationships and partnerships with community organizations, government agencies, funders, and other stakeholders to create opportunities for collaboration and greater community impact.
