SUPPORT IN CANADA PROGRAMS
Homelessness Outreach Program
NILECAPD provides outreach and practical support to vulnerable individuals experiencing
homelessness or housing instability in Calgary through services that include food distribution,
clothing assistance, hygiene supplies, referrals to housing and social services, community
support and advocacy, and connection to culturally appropriate resources. The intended
outcomes are reduced isolation, improved access to support services, increased housing
stability, and improved overall well-being.
Family Reunification Support
Many newcomers and refugees experience prolonged separation from their families because of
conflict, displacement, and immigration challenges. NILECAPD assists by connecting families
with resources and community supports, helping individuals navigate available settlement
services, providing information and referrals, and supporting emotional and social reintegration
The intended outcomes are stronger family support systems, improved settlement outcomes,
and enhanced emotional well-being.
Youth Mentorship & Risk Prevention Programs
NILECAPD supports young people through mentorship and positive community engagement
opportunities designed to reduce the risks associated with gang involvement, substance use,
social exclusion, and unemployment. Activities include youth mentoring, leadership
development, educational support, employment readiness workshops, volunteer opportunities,
and community engagement initiatives. Intended Outcomes are improved educational
engagement, increased leadership skills, reduced risk behaviours, and greater community
participation.
Mental Health & Psychosocial Support
Recognizing the effects of trauma, displacement, and resettlement, NILECAPD promotes
access to culturally informed mental health and psychosocial supports. Services include
providing peer support, community wellness workshops, referrals to counselling and mental
health services, social support networks, and trauma-informed community programming.
Intended outcomes are improved mental well-being, reduced social isolation, and increased
access to appropriate support services.
Community Events & Cultural Connection
NILECAPD hosts events that promote belonging, social inclusion, cultural pride, and community
cohesion. Examples include family dinners, cultural celebrations, community discussions, youth
and family gatherings, and educational workshops. Intended outcomes are stronger
community connections, reduced isolation, preservation of cultural identity, and greater civic
participation.
Legal & Settlement Support
NILECAPD assists newcomers and refugees in connecting with services that support successful
settlement and integration in Canada. Support includes referrals to legal services, housing
resources, government program information, employment service referrals, and settlement
navigation assistance. Intended Outcomes are improved access to services, increased
newcomer self-sufficiency, and successful integration into Canadian society.
Seniors Program
To address the growing challenge of social isolation among older adults, NILECAPD hosts
monthly gatherings for senior men and women. The program typically serves approximately 50
senior men and 50 senior women for a total of approximately 100 seniors per month. Activities
include community discussions, wellness education, cultural storytelling, peer support, and
social and recreational engagement. Intended Outcomes are reduced isolation, improved
emotional well-being, preservation of traditional knowledge, and increased community
connectedness.
Newcomers Support Program
NILECAPD assists newly arrived immigrants, refugees, and newcomer families in successfully
settling and integrating into Canadian society. Recognizing that adjusting to a new country can
be challenging, the program provides practical guidance, information, and community support to
help newcomers navigate unfamiliar systems and build confidence in their new environment.
Services include English as a Second Language (ESL) Support (e.g., referrals to language
training programs, providing conversational English practice opportunities, language
development through community-based learning activities, connecting newcomers with
educational resources), Family Support and Connections to Services (e.g., referrals to
settlement agencies, guidance on accessing health and social services, information about
educational opportunities, connections to employment and training resources, navigation of
community support programs), New Country Orientation (e.g., advising on Canadian laws
and civic responsibilities, healthcare and education systems, employment standards and
workplace culture, banking and financial literacy, public transportation, municipal resources and
supports, cultural adaptation and integration). Intended outcomes are improved English
language confidence, increased awareness of available community services, enhanced
settlement and integration success, increased newcomer self-sufficiency, improved family
stability and well-being, increased participation in community life, and reduced barriers to
accessing essential services.
