Nyadeng was living in a displaced persons camp in South Sudan when her life was shattered by violence. Like many girls and women in conflict-affected settings, she faced daily risks simply trying to meet basic needs. One day, while gathering firewood in the forest, she was attacked and gang-raped by a soldier. The physical injuries and emotional trauma were devastating, leaving her vulnerable in a setting where support is often limited and stigma can silence survivors.
When NILECAPD staff learned of Nyadeng’s situation, they acted quickly. The organization arranged for her to receive additional treatment at a hospital in Uganda, ensuring that her immediate medical needs were addressed. But NILECAPD’s commitment did not stop with emergency response. The organization recognized that survivors of violence also need long-term support, safety, and opportunities to rebuild their futures. For this reason, Nyadeng was later enrolled in school in Kenya, where she was given the chance to continue her education and begin imagining a life beyond the trauma she had endured.
NILECAPD’s work in South Sudan includes protection services, psychosocial support, health interventions, and assistance for women and girls affected by conflict, displacement, and gender-based violence. The organization understands that healing is not only about surviving a violent event, but also about restoring dignity, creating opportunity, and walking with survivors as they recover. Through its child protection and women’s support programs, NILECAPD helps vulnerable people access services, pursue education, and reclaim their voice.
Nyadeng went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in social work—an extraordinary achievement that speaks to both her strength and the importance of sustained support. Today, her life reflects resilience, healing, and purpose. She was not defined by what happened to her. Instead, she was empowered to move forward with dignity and to build a future that once seemed impossible.
For other survivors facing violence and displacement, Nyadeng’s story is a reminder that help is possible. NILECAPD continues to stand with women and girls in crisis, offering care, protection, and pathways to a new beginning.
